The treatment

What a head spa actually is

It starts with a proper look at your scalp, then an aromatic cleanse and exfoliation to clear away the product, oil and dead skin that ordinary washing leaves behind. What follows is the part people come back for: a slow, rhythmic massage that releases the tension you have been holding in your head and neck and brings circulation back to the scalp, finished with warm steam and nourishing essences worked through the hair.

The tradition we draw on is Nordic rather than Japanese — a Scandinavian scalp ritual built around clarity, freshness and a scalp that is genuinely clean. In our spa it sits under Air, one of the five elements the whole menu is organized around, each drawn from a different part of the world.

Your hair does benefit, because hair grows out of skin and skin responds to being looked after. But most people leave talking about how the hour felt.

The menu

Three ways to do it

All three happen in the same candlelit room, with the same certified-organic care. What changes is what the hour is for.

  • Classic Nordic Head Spa

    $150

The one to start with, and the one most people mean when they say head spa. A scalp analysis, an aromatic cleanse and exfoliation, then the slow rhythmic massage, warm steam, nourishing essences and an arm massage.

Best forA first head spa, and for tension carried in the head and neck.

  • Sacred Roots Head Spa Therapy

    $100

Our targeted therapy, built around thinning, shedding and a scalp that is out of balance rather than around relaxation alone. The same ritual, aimed at a specific concern.

Best forHair loss concerns, and a scalp that is not behaving.

  • Grand Lotus Crown Ceremony

    $275

The deluxe version, and the one to book when you want the afternoon to disappear. A soothing foot bath ritual and harmonious sound therapy alongside the scalp work, from head to toe.

Best forA gift, a birthday, or the end of a long stretch.

Two things worth knowing before you book: a head spa does not include a blow-out — time under a professional dryer is, and a blow-dry can be added when you book — and hair longer than shoulder length carries a small additional service fee.

What we use

Certified organic, on your scalp as well as your hair

Alora is a NATULIQUE concept salon, which means certified-organic, ammonia-free products in every service rather than one shelf in the corner. That includes their Head Spa Balance hairwash and conditioner, which is what your scalp meets during the ritual.

The room is low-tox by design — no harsh fumes, no noise you have to talk over. If your scalp reacts to conventional products, say so when you book and we will plan the treatment around it.

Good to know

Which head spa should I book?

Classic Nordic is the one to start with, and the one most people mean when they say head spa. Choose Sacred Roots instead if your concern is thinning, shedding or an unhappy scalp, since it is built around that. The Grand Lotus Crown Ceremony is the unhurried version, with a foot bath ritual and sound therapy, for when you want the whole afternoon to disappear.

What are the five elements in your spa menu?

Our spa is organized around Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Ether. Each element has its own energy and draws on rituals from a different part of the world: Mediterranean, Scandinavian, Middle Eastern, Ancient Oriental, and our own signature rituals. It is a way of choosing a treatment by how you want to feel rather than by a list of names.

Do you do both hair and spa treatments?

Yes. Alora is a full salon and a wellness spa in one place, so you can book color or a cut and a head spa, facial or pedicure in the same visit.

Where are you and is there parking?

We are at 710 Chauvet Drive, Pittsburgh, in Robinson Township, with easy parking right outside. We are a short drive from Moon, Coraopolis, Kennedy and McKees Rocks.
